Good Movies I Have Just Seen

This is my coming out party, my ode, if you will, to profess my undying love of all things Wes Anderson, the brilliant film-maker. If you have not heard of this man, do not fret! Wes is a forgiving God, provided you go see The Darjeeling Limited immediately. Again, if you have not heard of that film, then we have a problem. Look it up, fools, and if you’re too lazy to do that, just read on.

In case you just have to stick it into a genre like the stubborn ass you are, I suppose it would be that term I hate oh so much, Dramedy. It is a story, first and foremost, about three insecure and imperfect brothers, on a journey to find their mother on a seemingly magical Indian express, The Darjeeling Limited. This is a story populated by strange characters, but none so strange as the thee brothers themselves.

In fact, the brothers are the most interesting thing in the film, what with their quirks and general inconsistencies. The Oldest, played by. The Middle brother, playing brilliantly by Owen Wilson, organized the whole (at first glance) wild goose chase. Finally, the youngest, played by Jason Schartzman (who has come a long way from his protagonist role in Rushmore) is the low-key sibling, appearing to take no sides and be neutral. Neither of the three can get along for any length of time, but it is believable, they’re not just feuding to make us laugh. I truly got the sense that these three siblings, who saw each other on the train for the first time in years, moved away from each other for a reason.

I really don’t want to spoil anything, so I won’t say any more of the story. Just be careful to not take anything in it too seriously. If you get the chance, see this movie in a theaters, and hurry! It won’t be playing for very long. Also, go to a video rental place, and rent The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic. Both are by Anderson, and both are masterpieces in their own right.

Speaking of movies you should see, why the hell have you not gone out and seen Lars and the Real Girl? What is your problem? Do you hate good movies, genuinely good movies? Yet another gem to come out of the independent film scene, Lars is one of the most touching movies I have ever seen. I’m not even going to talk about the plot, just go into it expecting nothing, and yet everything. In all seriousness, its that good.

That’s all for now.
